When I was about 12 years old, I also received an allowance, but there was a condition attached to it: I had to show where and how much I had spent and / or received (like for a birthday or a job) and I had to show that the balance equalled my cash. My father never questioned why I had spent money on anything, or if it was a smart purchase. I just had to show for it the following week in order to receive my allowance. In those days there were no credit cards yet, but I always pay off the full amount!
